Intern Exclusive: Issa Herrera
Issa Herrera is currently an intern in TAP’s Virtual Intensive Training Internship. In addition to TAP, Issa is also working toward their BFA in animation. We asked Issa a few Qs about their experience as a TAP intern, thoughts on animation as activism, and more.
What is one of your favorite animated characters and why?
My Favorite Animated character has to be Snoopy from "THE PEANUTS MOVIE" (2015). Not only is this character one who I have loved since I was a child, but it also amazes me how Blue Sky managed to turn a 2D character into a 3D one that still holds that 2D style to it.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration mostly from music as well as car rides.
What brought you to TAP?
What brought me to TAP was a film called "Frog Legs." The "Frog Legs" animation was so interesting to me, especially from a rigger’s stand-point. When I first saw it I thought it was someone’s senior thesis. However, the more I looked into it, the more I realized it was more than that.
How has your experience changed from the beginning of the internship to now?
My experience has changed so much in just a couple of months! Having the opportunity to not only grow my skills but see others grows theirs too is amazing. The connections I have made are all unique and genuine. The level of support, as well as community, is motivational and inspiring!
What is something you accomplished at TAP that you are proud of?
Some of the things I have been able to accomplish at TAP are connections which I believe will always be there for each other as I will be there for them. The second biggest accomplishment is portfolio pieces. The third accomplishment would be growth, both in personal and professional skills.
Do you think animation can be activism? If so, how?
I believe it can to an extent. A lot of people are driven by emotions and experiences which is something creators can bring to their public if done correctly.
What advice do you have for aspiring animators?
Take risks, never stop, and always, ALWAYS keep trying! A quote I live by is the following: "One step might not seem like a lot, but the more steps you take the more you will realize the walk you have made."
